Twin Ports Climate Conversations: Dip Into Data

You don't have to be a scientist to explore climate data. The July 2023 Twin Ports Climate Conversations webinar will feature three experts to help us take a quick dip into climate-related data, gain a better understanding of data sources, and learn how data may improve your coastal resilience work.

Kim Channell, climatologist, Great Lakes Climate Adaptation Partnership (GLISA), School for Environment and Sustainability, University of Michigan will give an overview of resources available to aid and inform climate resilience efforts. 

Kim will share:

  • Local climate data
  • Tools
  • Regional climate information
  • Educational resources from GLISA

Clinton Little, coastal program specialist, Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal Program, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will share an overview of updated geospatial data and applications to support greater understanding of coastal processes in a changing climate. 

Clinton will discuss:

  • Three-dimensional Elevation Program (3DEP)
  • Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR, a remote sensing method used to examine the surface of the Earth)
  • Minnesota Landslide Inventory (U.S. Geological Survey)
  • Minnesota Lake Superior Hardened Shoreline Inventory (Coastal Program)

Brandon Krumwiede, physical scientist; Great Lakes regional geospatial coordinator, Geospatial Solutions Program, Office for Coastal Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will give an overview of the NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP): Past, Present and Future.

C-CAP data forms the coastal expression of the National Land Cover Database and is derived from the analysis of multiple dates of remotely sensed imagery. C-CAP provides users the information needed to better understand change over time and is often used to inform other geospatial modeling applications. 

Brandon will provide an overview of:

  • C-CAP applications related to work in the Great Lakes
  • How to access the data
  • Tools that leverage C-CAP data
  • What is on the horizon with new high-resolution C-CAP data currently under development
