Twin Ports Freshwater Folk will host a hybrid presentation titled When Wastewater is Stormwater: Urban Sanitation Challenges in Rio Grande do Sul on September 4, 2024. This month's presentation will be led by Maria Cristina de Almeida Silva, an associate professor at the Hydraulic Research Institute of Brazil's Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and a visiting scholar with the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
In-person attendees are invited to join for networking, sandwiches, and plenty of fresh water at 11:30 a.m. at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Toxicology and Ecology Division Lab in Duluth, Minnesota. The online and in-person presentation will begin at noon. Sadly, the Zoom option is sandwich-free.

Presentation Abstract:
This talk will address environmental sanitation in Brazil, with a specific focus on Rio Grande do Sul. It will highlight sanitation challenges that emerged during a flood in May 2024. The talk will also introduce the Institute of Hydraulic Research (IPH) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), outlining its areas of expertise and research groups—particularly the Center for Studies in Environmental Sanitation (NESA).
